Renewal of Residence Permit

Renewal of Residence Permit

Non EU/EEA-students who will be staying in Norway for more than one year must remember to apply for renewal of their residence permit.

We advise you to go to UDI's website for updated and detailed information about renewal of residence permit for students. The following information applies to all students who need to renew their residence permit:

  • You should register your application on UDI's Application Portal and book an appointment with the police at least three months before your current residence permit expires.
  • Order a progress report from OsloMet.
  • For tuition fee paying students, pay for the tuition fee for the next academic year.
  • No later than one month before your residence permit expires, you must go to your booked police appointment.
  • As long as you have applied in due time you are entitled to stay on the same conditions while UDI process your application.
  • If your current permit expires before you apply, you cannot leave Norway, even for short trips, until the permit has been renewed.

Please note that you may need to take additional measures depending on your study situation.

  • Progress report

One of the documents needed when applying to renew a student residence permit is a progress report. Apply for a progress report at the end of spring semester. The report will be ready when all exam results are ready.

A progress report is a statement from OsloMet about your study progression and part-time work permit. Please note that the part-time work permit is not automatically renewed, and you must document satisfactory progress in your studies to continue working part-time.

A satisfactory study progression is 50-60 credits per year. If your study progression is not satisfactory without a valid reason (parental leave or documented sick leave) you will be given less work permit hours and you will be delayed in your study programme. Please contact us at international@oslomet.no if you are unsure about your study progression.

  • Delayed in your studies

You must contact your faculty/department in order to apply for extension of your study right and get it approved before you apply for a residence permit extension. .

For students who are delayed in their studies and need to apply for an extension of their residence permit, the progression report will be written when all the exams for the semester are registered: June/July (if your permit expires in August) or January (if your permit expires in February).

Important! A delay of more than one year that is not related to documented illness or parental leave will not be approved by UDI. This applies if you have been delayed in a Bachelor’s degree programme in Norway. Please see UDI’s information about renewal of residence permit in order to see the detailed regulations.

  • Fieldwork and exchange

If you are planning on going abroad to do fieldwork or exchange as part of your studies:

    • You have to apply for the renewal well in advance in order to receive the renewal before you leave Norway.
    • The duration of the fieldwork/exchange must be stated in the application.
    • The immigration authorities do not grant a permit for the period of the fieldwork/exchange if it is more than six months. In that case, your permit will be valid until departure and you will need to submit a new application from abroad before returning to Norway to complete your studies.
